The Value of Owned Audiences

Creators have spent years chasing followers. The next competitive advantage may be owning the audience behind them.
Platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Substack have made it easier to monetize through subscriptions and memberships.
But, there’s a catch.
Creators are still building on platforms they don’t control. Algorithms change, reach disappears, and the relationship with the audience ultimately belongs to someone else.
That’s becoming more important as consumers hit subscription fatigue. The average North American household now spends nearly $200 per month across roughly 10 video subscriptions, while 4 in 10 consumers say they’re tired of subscriptions altogether. There may only be so many memberships fans are willing to add.
Investors and brands are already betting on what comes next. Earlier this year, CAA and Integrated Media Company launched a $250 million holding company focused on acquiring and developing creator-led businesses, while brands like Lowe’s, Vaseline, and Crocs are experimenting with creator products, commerce, and entertainment that extend far beyond sponsored posts.
For creators, the goal is increasingly becoming less about renting attention and more about turning that attention into something they actually own.

6 Creator Economy Trends to Watch
The creator economy is getting harder for the world’s biggest companies to ignore. Disney, TikTok, Accenture, Snap, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Mastercard are all making bigger bets on creators in 2026.
Creator Economy Trends:
Disney + TikTok team up: TikTok creators will be able to use Disney IP like Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar, while select TikTok videos will also appear inside Disney+.
Accenture acquires Whalar: Accenture added creator agency Whalar to Accenture Song, bringing in a business that has worked on $600M+ in creator campaigns across 40 countries.
Snap bets on AR: Snap unveiled its $2,195 SPECS augmented reality glasses, continuing the push toward wearables as a new format for creating and consuming content.
YouTube’s U.S. impact keeps growing: YouTube says its creator ecosystem contributed $60B+ to U.S. GDP in 2025 and supported more than 540,000 jobs.
LinkedIn launches a Creator Marketplace: The platform is rolling out an invite-only marketplace where brands can discover creators, evaluate fit, and negotiate paid partnerships.
Mastercard builds for creator businesses: Manifest Financial launched a Mastercard debit card specifically for creators and entrepreneurs, with business tools and financial protections built in.
The creator economy is becoming less of a niche industry and more of a layer across nearly every major one.
YouTube raises monetization rules

YouTube is about to make creators’ view counts look a little bigger.
Starting August 24, YouTube will count a view the moment a video starts playing, bringing its system closer to TikTok and Instagram. Creators will likely see total views climb faster as a result.
The old measurement isn’t disappearing entirely. YouTube will keep tracking “engaged views” inside Analytics, giving creators a better sense of how many people actually stuck around.
Importantly, the change won’t affect creator earnings or YouTube Partner Program eligibility. Revenue will still be tied to engaged Shorts views and engaged watch hours rather than the new top-line view count.
The bigger takeaway: view counts across platforms are becoming more standardized, but also potentially more inflated. For creators, engagement and watch time will matter even more than the headline number.
